Facebook Tips

  • Set up your account, then search for some of your friends to see if they are on Facebook. If they are, click the Add as Friend link and send them a note saying you are new to Facebook.
  • IMPORTANT: Upload a picture. It’s called FACEbook and a lot of people don’t accept friends who don’t have a picture.
  • After you set up your account, in the upper left, click on settings and go through the account and privacy settings. Remember, if you have it set so only your friends can read your profile, if someone bothers you, you can Remove as Friend (bottom of left hand column).
  • Remember: social networking is about establishing relationships. Relationships first, marketing second. If you use either Facebook or Twitter to aggressively market, you will make very little progress. Always share helpful information and reach out to others in a caring way. Promote others as well as yourself.
  • Spend some time checking out Groups, Events, and adding Friends. There is a toolbar along the bottom of the screen where you’ll see the word “Applications.” Click on the word to see what is available to you.
  • Be somewhat discriminating about who you add to your friends list. At this point, Facebook limits the number of friends you can have to 5,000, although that limit is supposed to be eliminated sometime in 2009.
  • Create sub-lists so you can easily find people who are your friends and to fit into a specific category.
  • Update your status at least once a day. If you use Tweetdeck, you can post to both sites simultaneously. You can also do this at www.ping.fm
  • Comment on newsfeed posts. Just click the “Like” link or make a short comment.
  • Pay attention to what others are doing. Pick one person who appears to know what they’re doing and check in with their profile every few days.
  • Never “poke” another person.
  • If someone really appeals to you, send a message and tell them you’d like to connect by phone, and actually get to meet them.
  • Do not install the Fun Wall or any other Wall. Use the one that comes with Facebook.
  • Send little “gifts” like Good Karma and other little doodads very sparingly.
  • Put enough information in the little text box under your picture so that people can tell what you do from that small paragraph. If you set up your privacy settings correctly, people who aren’t your friend can see that.
  • Be sure that you set your privacy settings so that people can write on your Wall and people who are not your friends can see your basic information.
"Joan, I really appreciated how you walked me through the process of creating a website. Even though mine is in Norwegian, you were able to give me great advice about the copy -- and I love the design." - Hege Nordahl, www.hegehordahl.com
"Joan has helped me with my Web presence since 1997 when she built my first site. She did a great job with my new WordPress site and has helped me build a following on my blog and Facebook. She does a incredible job!" Anthony Atwell - www.SantaFe1.com
