How to Set Up a Facebook Fan Page
Following are basic instructions for getting started with your Facebook Fan Page
- Do some research and check out pages of businesses you’re familiar with plus pages of your competition. If you have a name in mind for your page, do a Facebook search to see if others are using this name. Become a fan of some pages to see how they interact with their fans and what the fans post to the page’s Wall.
- Scroll to the bottom of any Facebook Web page and click on the word Advertising.
- On the top, just under the blue bar, click on Pages. Then click the green button that says Create a Page.
- The next screen you come to requires a lot of forethought. First choose whether you are local, a brand, product, or organization, or a if you are an artist, band, or public figure. You will most likely fit into the category of Brand, Product, or Organization.
- Next choose the name of your page. How you do this is extremely important because the name cannot be changed. Think of keywords and what you want to brand. If you have an established business name use that, possibly combined with keywords. You don’t want the name to be too long because each time you post something on the Wall, the whole name is included.
- Click the checkbox for not making the page publicly available at this time, then click create page.
- Upload a picture and fill in as much information as possible. You can edit and add to this later.
- Whenever you click on Edit Page (under the picture or logo on the Wall page), you will come to a list of a lot of options. You’ll probably want to make sure that the page is available to everyone.
- For Wall Settings, show Posts by Page and Fans. For now leave the default landing page as is. I suggest that fan permissions include posting content on the wall but not photos or videos, unless your business would benefit from that kind of input.
- If you want to make mobile uploads, then fill in the next section.
- Leave the applications that are already there and at some point you’re going to add the application Static FBML. This allows you to add the equivalent of an HTML page to any tab. I especially recommend a Welcome page. If you don’t know HTML, you’ll need some help with this. Once you create a Welcome page, you will make that your default entry page.
- Once you have 25 fans, you can get a custom URL at www.facebook.com/username
